Mission Almost Accomplished by Rio De La Cruz

After two weeks of decent training and generally lovely weather in Washington DC, Boston greeted us with biting cold gusts of damp wind-not ideal for most tropical inhabitants like us. Although we were forewarned that temperatures in Boston would be cooler than in DC, nothing prepared me for running a marathon in this harsh weather. And to make matters worse, our travel agent messed up our hotel reservations at the Westin Copley Place Hotel. After a 1.5-hour flight from DC, it took over 4 hours before we finally decided to pay extra for another room, just so I could get off my feet and relax for the night.

But the stressful saga continued the following morning when the front desk still could not find our reservations (despite paying for it months ahead) and we had to be transferred to The Colonnade Hotel since the Westin was fully booked for the marathon weekend. The stress level was reaching critical level at this point and my head was ready to explode. To make the long story short, after giving a mouthful to our travel agent over the phone, we were finally able to get a room for our last 3 nights. But we couldn’t even check into the room yet because it wasn’t ready. It was already past lunchtime and with no breakfast and lunch on the day before my race, I was already fuming mad, stressed out, and starving. And I still had to pick up my number packet at the John Hynes Veterans Convention Center! Good thing the pick-up venue was just across and walking distance from our hotel. We saw a Chinese bistro along the way so we settled for a disappointing brunch of bland Americanized Chinese food before proceeding to the number pick-up.  continue reading here

Free Tibet's Panchen Lama

The Panchen Lama was 6 years old when he and his parents were kidnapped from their home in Tibet by the Chinese government. Now a teenage boy, he was the world's youngest political prisoner when he was first abducted and has been missing for 10 years.

Panchen Lama is a religious title like Vice-President or Prime Minister that Tibetans give to the second greatest leader of Tibet. Panchen means "Great Scholar" and Lama is a word Tibetans use for a religious teacher. We believe that the Panchen Lama is the protector of all the world's living beings.

Subliminal Craving

Spring na po sa aming barangay.  Pagnag jog ka sa gabi or kung weekend, sari saring amoy ng grill foods ang maamoy mo sa hood.  Me burger, me bacon, me veggies, fish, steaks at syempre pa manok.  Wait... may I punas laway first. Bertha ilabas mo jan yung pusit at tuyo, maihaw.
"Hey Paulding what the hell is that smell! Stop it or i'll call the cops."
"Shut up Howard! This is a free country.  I can grill whatever I freaking want!"

Benjamin's Make-over

Protect yourself
It only takes a few seconds to check the new $100 note and know it’s real.

Portrait Watermark
Hold the note to light and look for a faint image of Benjamin Franklin in the blank space to the right of the portrait. The image is visible from either side of the note.

Security Thread

Hold the note to light to see an embedded thread running vertically to the left of the portrait. The thread is imprinted with the letters USA and the numeral 100 in an alternating pattern and is visible from both sides of the note. The thread glows pink when illuminated by ultraviolet light.

Color-Shifting 100
Tilt the note to see the numeral 100 in the lower right corner of the front of the note shift from copper to green.

Raised Printing

Move your finger up and down Benjamin Franklin’s shoulder on the left side of the note. It should feel rough to the touch, a result of the enhanced intaglio printing process used to create the image. Traditional raised printing can be felt throughout the $100 note, and gives genuine U.S. currency its distinctive texture.

Gold 100
Look for a large gold numeral 100 on the back of the note. It helps those with visual impairments distinguish the denomination.

Microprinting
Look carefully to see the small printed words THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on Benjamin Franklin’s jacket collar, USA 100 around the blank space containing the portrait watermark, ONE HUNDRED USA along the golden quill, and small 100s in the note borders.

Rio De La Cruz in the 114th Boston Marathon

Takbo Pinoy! Takbo!

Ang official time ng mga Pinoy;  Rio B. De La Cruz - 3:00:15,  Proxy Cabuag - 3:32:11,  Alex Dino - 3:40:32,  William Veto - 3:40:32,  Jenny Kelly - 3:59:15,  Rowena Dejesus - 4:18:45 and  Aloysius Llaguno - 4:52:13.

Happy Patriot's Day

Patriots' Day celebrates the first battles of the Revolutionary War, the Battle of Lexington and the Battle of Concord, the site of that "shot heard round the world."  Today, April 19, is the "official" Patriots' Day (and the day on which the battles were fought in 1775), but the holiday is officially celebrated on the third Monday in April.  It is also the 114th running of the Boston Marathon, the world's oldest annual marathon.

Ang Kick-Ass Balisong ni Hit Girl

I got a kick from watching Chloe Grace Moretz aka Hit Girl.  Ala-eh kagaleng bumirada ng kanyang new Balisong.  Regalo ng tatay niyang kalbo este ni Nicolas Cage.  Parang tunay na batangueña baga. O kabayan nood na!

Balisong, otherwise known as a butterfly knife or fan knife, is a folding pocket knife with two handles counter-rotating around the tang such that, when closed, the blade is concealed within grooves in the handles.  It is sometimes called a Batangas  knife.  In the hands of a trained user, the knife blade can be brought to bear quickly using one hand.  Manipulations, called "flipping", are performed for art or amusement.

The Balisong is commonly used by Filipino people as a pocket utility knife. It is so popular in the Philippines that an urban legend exists about every Batangueño carrying it everywhere he goes. [wiki]
